ASUS VariDrive combines an 8X DVD read/write optical drive with a dock that includes fast USB 3.0, HDMI, VGA, and Ethernet ports. It immediately adds to the usability of mobile devices such as tablets and Ultrabooks, connecting to them via USB. VariDrive utilizes a transformable twisting build that affords vertical and horizontal placement, and at 15mm presents sleek portability and convenience. Its premium textured-aluminum presentation has recently garnered a 2013 CES Innovations Award.



Attractive and innovative design
VariDrive employs a concentric circle pattern on surfaces for greater aesthetic appeal and linkage to other ASUS products such as ZENBOOK. Its transformable build can smoothly twist to alternate between flat horizontal alignment and segmented vertical placement. Considerable engineering had to go into making such a concept a reality, as VariDrive maintains compact measurements and fine details and therefore has to accommodate sophisticated mechanics within limited space.

Multiple peripherals in a single device with USB 3.0 performance
VariDrive integrates a slot-loading 8X Super-Multi DVD read/write combo drive and several I/O connectors. There are four USB 3.0 ports on the device, which enable up to ten times the transfer speeds of USB 2.0. On the back, two are general purpose and one is for connecting to host devices. A dedicated USB 3.0 port on the side is also general-purpose plus offers high-powered and faster charging of mobile devices. Charging works when connected to host devices or independently using the bundled power adapter. With VariDrive, customers can read and write data to optical media, connect to external displays via HDMI or VGA, and go online using faster and more stable wired connections thanks to the included Ethernet port.
