Sniper might be able to answer this best. I believe the new PSUs already support 1 and 2 since 2008 or so, but 3 is a separate connector to power the motherboard. Older motherboards used to accept Molex connectors (like the white 4 wire plug that goes behind IDE hard drives and optical drives).

just plug to 1 and 2 to your PSU and your good to go,,,, actually number 2 is for extra power for overclocking and stability ,,

number 3 is for extra power for have 3 or 4 way SLI/CFx Setup
